Insurance?

Anyone gotten a quote yet?  I got one from a broker in NY and it was over 2k!!  I think it was mentioned here that since the car is not totally in the insurance companies system, they are tacking on some extra.  

I just called Geico and was giving the following quote:

Do you have Hagerty for some of your other cars? I think my quote was under $300 for a year.
Any of the classic car insurers will take a limited edition car as a collector car if you have other daily drivers.

Really? But won't it have the same usage limitations as classic car insurance? ( mileage, no use for commuting etc)

Wait, there are some differences.The 9th digit is a check digit and is different from car to car:


3C3CFFBR7CT500***

You will need to work with dealer or carfax or insurance company and try differnet "check digits" till you get the right one. Everyone who has tried has succeeded.

Didn't work for me. I tried every digit (0-9) in the check digit spot. My insurance company is USAA. I tried online, didn't call them.

I have no limitations other than I stated usage of about 5000 mi per year which I say about all of my cars. They can be used for more than car events and parades. The driving is for pleasure even if you take it to work a bit.

You must of course have a real daily driver that is insured. I don't put more than 6000 miles per year on all of my cars combined because I work at home.  I probably have more miles on the boat or actually hours in the boat.

I have USAA as well; you have to call and let them know that you need to set up insurance on a car new to the USA and thus not yet in their system. They'll then elevate you to a customer service representative empowered with the ability to do such.

When I called on Monday of this week it appears that this was their first encounter with the 500. The person with whom I spoke mentioned that she was going to educate her team on the car ASAP and initiate the process of entering the brand and product into the system. As aside - I pointed her to the FIAT 500 website and she flipped. Quite possible I may have sold a car LOL.

This a great tip.  Thank you! I have a 74 TR6 insured with Hagarty so I will definitely call and talk to them about the ideaof adding the FIAT limited production model on the policy. Not sure I can keep the FIAT down to 5,000 miles though if it's that much fun.

I did not think a new car could be insured with classic car insurance. Sure we can claim that this car is a special edition, but is that really enough?  I'll be calling JC Taylor in the AM and will post my results.

My company ANPAC, will insure it as a "modern Classic", but it has to be appraised.

It seemed to be good enough for Hagerty but I don't have the insurance yet. I need my VIN and of course to take delivery.

My classic car insurer - JC Taylor - will NOT insure a new Fiat 500. So, back to Geico it seems.

I checked with Hagerty that insures my TR6 and they declined, saying that they are not yet rating the 500 PE as a collectible limited edition. That could change in the future. In addition they said that for new collectibles, they limit the mileage to 3,500 per year.

Two months ago they told me they would. I did tell them it is a 2012 model which screws things up with most insurance companies.
 I guess I need my vin for #289 with the check digit.

I gave them my vin and the could ID it in the system. The car just isn't on their radar as a limited edition (yet).

I tried to get a quote from Progressive, my insurance carrier today.  I tried this morning, and still no reply back yet.  I had to leave an email for them as I didn't have enough time to call.   I let them know that the Fiat is back and that they might want to update their system.  Gave them basic information about the car: horsepower, airbags, ABS, traction control, and the like.  This was to try to get them to see the car as the most docile and unassuming car for the best rates.  We shall see if this helps with the insurance premiums.  As someone else pointed out that they might see it as a very small car, therefore a very unsafe car.  

I will post what they have to say, when they get back to me.  Which hopefully will be sooner than later.  I sure hope that they will be reasonable with the rates.  Sure hope they don't see it as inherently unsafe due to its size.
