The issue was related to floor mats and driver error. A very low percentage of people were affected. |
Exactly what he said. My floor mats are secured properly, and even if they weren't and it were to get stuck, I know where the brake pedal is and how to shift into neutral.
The whole thing was quite nearly a hoax. NHTSA came out a month or two ago confirming that their findings concluded that Toyotas do not have an unintended acceleration problem. Toyota's going on with the voluntary recall just so they look good, and it's a really inexpensive mod to do anyway—they really just shave a bit off the bottom of the pedal. But letting them do it lets me put that all recalls have been done on the listing when I go to sell it! :P

Good to hear. I thought that was the case anyway, same as the Audi's of the 80's.

OK, I know I commented way back in Nov on the first page but never posted an image of the truck, so without further ado, here it is, in all it's 231K+ miles glory.
This was taken on the 23 of November of last year and I'd just gotten home from work. |

I drive a 1987 Mercedes 560 Sl convertible with 40,000 miles on it. Baby blue and in perfect condition. I paid $14,000 for it last year about the time I put my money down for a Fiat 500. I have enjoyed the Mercedes quite a bit. I have not seen the PE #183.

Yes, I have had that happen. A couple or three times. All the same. My street enters a 4 lane highway on an uphill incline. These times, when I kept it floored to get moving up the hill rapidly, when I lifted off the accelerator near the crest, it kept moving at full speed for a few seconds. Disconcerting. I flipped the pedal a few times to "release" though no telling if that actually did anything given its drive by wire. Was definitely not the floor mat because this has happened since the pedal was shaved by Toyota. But not the sort of thing that would be repeatable on demand so we never took it in or bothered to report it. We'll be trading the Prius next year anyway.

My daily ride...until summer, then my daily ride is a bicycle...

Gavin, your ride brings back memories of a business trip to Paris a couple years ago .... that was the first time I saw a scooter w/two front wheels. The way those crazy guys slid the front ends of them through the corners around the Arch de Triumph circular still is a fond memory ... especially in light of the common puddles / haze of spilled diesel (very slippery stuff!) on the pavement. Cool stuff.

I've got an 2004 Mazda RX8 and wife has a Protege...The RX8 is for the high jump to make room for the Cinquecento. Years ago had an Alfa GTV6, Fiat Spider 2000 and a Strada...Loved ém all and can't wait to get back in a FIAT. (Unfortunately will be the automatic to please the Mrs...sigh)

Reading these threads made me think of all our varied automotive roots. When I was in college I went through three cars: A AH Sprite Mk II, Sunbeam Imp and a TR3. A look at the dimensions of the Imp
and 500 makes an interesting comparison: IMP 500 L 139 139.6 W 60.2 64.1 H 54.5 58.6 Wgt 1,647 2,430 WB 82 90.6 Now, think about tooling around in that IMP without any safety equipment excepting a seat belt in the land populated by Detroit whales as compared to the automotive mix we have on the highways today...Never gave a second thought to the size of the Imp then (except when at the butt end of jokes about where do you plug it in and where does the toast come out!)----FORZA FIAT! |
Yeah, interesting about where we got our start in driving, my first car was a 1968 Chrysler Newport 4 door back in the very early 80's while in HS, then went through 2 70's era Novas, a pedestrian bare bones '74 4 door and a slightly better equipped '78 2 door with the 305CI V8 instead of the 250 I6 the 4 door had, then a basic 4 door Ford Fairmont, then 2 Hondas, one being the 83 3 door Civic, then an 88 Honda Accord, now the truck so I'm looking at going small again, whatever I end up buying if not the Fiat (which is my first choice if I can swing for it). |
